Update Your Rig
You update a rig flashed with ARIS Rig OS from the app, in Settings → About → Software, on any device connected to the rig: at home, or away from home through remote access.
What the Software card shows
Section titled “What the Software card shows”- Rig software is the version the rig runs, for example rig-v55. A rig that has not taken an update yet shows Original image (no updates applied yet). In a browser this version covers the page too, because the rig serves the app.
- Last checked is when the rig last looked for a new version. The rig looks once a day; Check again looks now.
- When there is a new version, the card says rig-vN is available with what changed. Otherwise it says Up to date.
- This app appears in the iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac apps: the app’s own version. It does not update from this card; on iPhone and iPad it updates from the App Store, and on Android from Google Play.
Install an update
Section titled “Install an update”-
Open Settings → About → Software.
-
Tap Update to rig-vN, then Update. The rig installs the new version and restarts its software, so imaging stops for about a minute.
-
Wait while the card says Updating. The rig restarts partway through, so it will be briefly unreachable.
The update button appears only when the rig is safe to restart. While a sequence, autofocus, polar alignment, guiding, a slew or an exposure is running, the card says Not safe to restart right now and why. Update when the run is over.
An update also brings the newest version of the app the rig serves to browsers.
After the update
Section titled “After the update”In a browser at the rig’s own address, the tab you updated from reloads itself when the rig is back: Updated to rig-vN. Reloading the page…. Any other tab open on that rig offers This rig was updated to rig-vN. Reload to use the new version. Tap Reload.
If the update does not finish, the Software card says why; in a browser, a strip at the top also says The update did not finish, with Details to open the card. The rig checks each download before it installs anything, and if the install fails it puts the version it had back.
The iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac apps carry their own code, so they need no reload.
What an update keeps
Section titled “What an update keeps”An update replaces the rig’s software, not its data. Your equipment, sites, settings, saved sequences, trained flats, calibration frames and images stay on the rig.
When the rig software restarts, some camera and focuser drivers start with their own defaults. The rig puts your values back afterwards: the camera’s gain and offset, and the focuser’s temperature compensation.
Roll back
Section titled “Roll back”After an update, the rig keeps the version it replaced. The Software card names it on the Previous row: a version such as rig-v54, or Original image after the first update.
-
Open Settings → About → Software.
-
Tap Roll back to rig-v54 (or Roll back to the original image), then Roll back. The rig restarts its software, so imaging stops for about a minute.
You can update again afterwards. The rig keeps only one version back, so right after a rollback there is nothing further to go back to. A rollback leaves the app the rig serves to browsers as it is.
Rigs that update another way
Section titled “Rigs that update another way”- A rig you installed yourself with the setup script does not update from the app. Its Rig software row reads developer build, with Updated with git, not from here., and the card offers no buttons.
- A NINA rig updates the ARIS plugin from the same card when the plugin came from ARIS’s update channel. The new version installs at NINA’s next start, so nothing stops: the card asks you to restart NINA when you are not imaging. A plugin installed some other way says The ARIS plugin in NINA. It does not update from here.
